Revenue loss...

As the world cup campaign for the Indian team got over last Saturday, with Bangladesh beating the Bermuda, the 'stars' are coming back home.. There has been a lot of media reports touching upon the inherent revenue loss for the broadcasters and advertisers alike due to the premature exit of the Indian team.

Reports claim close to Rs. 2000 Cr of revenue loss :? Well, thats a huge sum of money to invest in a game of cricket (or any other sport for that matter) that too on a set of hugely non-performing, over-hyped players. At least, this World cup woes will set things right and bring sanity into the commercialization of the sport and the sports-person alike. I guess we may no longer see a Sachin, Dhoni, Dravid, Ganguly, Sehwag et. al., coming before us to drink a bottle of Pepsi or Boost or what not. In a way, this exit has been good to bring down the expectation of the 'Blue Billion'.

One of the Economic Times article fears that the cricket tours India is to undertake come May, may not attract as much commercial sponsorship as it has been for a while now. They predict close to 15 - 20 % dip in the 'investments' for the sponsorship.

I think there MUST be a clause in the sponsorship deals that underlines the required performance of a player. ie., if a Sachin Tendulkar is approached for a commercial by a company (it looks like they have to spend anywhere between Rs. 15 to 20 Crores per year to get his contract!), then there must be a clause that states that he must be performing at so-and-so level (say a consistent scores of above 50 in Test matches and at least 5 centuries in ODIs) to maintain the high standards that the Ad may project of him. Of course, these sound quite ridiculous if you are a fan of the 'funny old-game' myth. From a advertiser point of view, they are absolutely sane to expect a high-level of performance from their brand ambassador.

It might seem like these are quite drastic reactions to a loss in a single tournament but the Indian team as a whole have been under-performing for quite a while now. They had a disastrous tour of Pakistan followed by a even barren tour of West Indies and South Africa. I think one must have set the right expectations at least after the Champions trophy where our 'beloved' team was ousted in the first round as well.

Any ways, this is the right time for chopping off weeds and bringing sanity into the game.
